The Hazlewood Act is a benefit that provides qualified veterans, their spouses, and dependent children with an exemption that can cover up to 150 credit hours of eligible tuition and fees at Texas public institutions. Not all university charges are covered, and it does not include indirect expenses such as living expenses, books, or miscellaneous. For more information on the Hazlewood Act and eligibility requirements, please see the Texas Veterans Commission website for in-depth details: www.tvc.texas.gov/education/hazlewood/.
Hazlewood Decision
On January 26, 2015, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas-Houston
Division ruled that a portion of the Hazlewood Act was unconstitutional. That provision
requires veterans to have been a Texas resident at the time they entered military
service in order to receive exemptions of tuition and fees at Texas public institutions
of higher education.
The office of the Attorney General is currently reviewing the decision and may appeal
the ruling. In the interim, current Hazlewood eligibility requirements remain unchanged
pending appeal and legislative action, except for the individual specifically named
in the lawsuit.
New Incoming students will need to provide the 2 page application. and attach the DD-214. The DD-214 must be a Member 4 or Service 2 copy, attached to the additional requested items for the Application.
For all students who have previously attended and plan to attend any future terms, they must submit the Continued Enrollment Form for each semester.
The timeframe of Hazlewood review may take 1-2 weeks, based on submission of requested items.
Applications submitted the week of payment deadline will not be reviewed, and applicants must make payment arrangements to ensure classes are not dropped.
For students who are on an Academic Plan and or Probation, grades must be reviewed before a decision can be made on your application.
After Hazlewood is applied towards the recipient's tuition and fees, the applicant may be responsible for the Student Service Fee which is not covered by Hazlewood.
