Do you want to become a teacher? Our Master of Arts in Teaching with Texas Teacher Certification program provides future teachers an opportunity to earn initial teacher certification while getting ahead professionally by also earning a Master’s degree. There are two certification options for you.
The new "Urban Education Graduate Scholarship" will award $1,000 to selected students in the Fall 2024 semester. All new MAT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
The Master of Teaching (MAT) degree with Core Subjects EC-6 and ESL Supplemental Certification prepares and certifies graduates for self-contained and subject specific teaching positions in Texas elementary schools. The program also trains and certifies graduates to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) students in both mainstream and ESL self-contained elementary classrooms.

The Master of Teaching (MAT) degree with Secondary Certification prepares graduates to teach grades 7 to 12 in their area of specialization.

Admission Requirements |

1. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (includes all attempted coursework). |
2. Minimum of 12 hours (15 for Math/Science) of completed coursework in the applicant’s desired certification area with minimum 2.5 GPA. |
3. Submit application and supporting materials via UHD Graduate Application Portal. $35 application fee (waived for UHD alumni). |
4. Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. |
5. Personal statement of 700 words or more on how you believe your educational and professional background will contribute to your success in this program. |
6. Three professional letters of recommendation (requested through application portal). |
7. Graduate Records Exam (GRE) scores required if undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 of

8. After review of MAT application materials, applicants will receive instruction via email to complete the Application for Teacher Candidacy in TK20. |
