Urban Education Graduation Scholarship: will award $1,000 to selected students

The new "Urban Education Graduate Scholarship" will award $1,000 to selected students in the Fall 2024 semester. All new MAT students are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

The MAT in Curriculum & Instruction has 3 concentrations.

The Master of Arts in Teaching is a graduate degree program focused on advancing the curricular, instructional, and assessment knowledge and skills of current classroom teachers. This general track provides students with a holistic approach to advancing their expertise and developing effective teaching strategies.

The Master of Arts in Teaching with an area of expertise in History is designed to prepare students to teach high school dual-credit/college History and university-level History courses. Students take six courses in the Department of History and six courses in the Department of Urban Education. The courses in this program are taught utilizing a combination of face-to-face, online, and hybrid instruction.

The Master of Arts in Teaching with an area of expertise in Mathematics is designed to prepare students to teach high school dual-credit and community college-level Math courses. Students take six courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and six courses in the Department of Urban Education. The courses in this program are taught utilizing a combination of face-to-face, online, and hybrid instruction.

Please note: Applicants to the MAT in Dual-Credit Mathematics must show successful completion of some sophomore-level or higher mathematics coursework including a Calculus sequence and at least one proof-based course such as Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, or Introduction to Proof.

Admission Requirements

  1. Applicants to the MAT in Curriculum & Instruction program should be practicing, certified teachers with at least one year of teaching experience.
  2. A minimum GPA of 2.5 overall or in the last 60 credit hours is required for admission.
  3. Submit admissions application via UHD GRAD Portal for MAT in Curriculum and Instruction.
  4. Submit official transcripts from all institutions attended to the UHD Graduate Admissions office. More information about submitting transcripts can be found on the Official Transcript Submission webpage
  5. Submit a personal statement of 700 words or more on how you believe your educational and professional background will contribute to your success in this program. This can be submitted to UHD Graduate Admissions at [email protected].
  6. Request three professional recommendation letters to be submitted to [email protected].
  7. Once all above requirements are complete, your application will be reviewed, and if approved, you will be contacted to schedule an admissions interview.
  8. Please note: At this time, the MAT program cannot accommodate international applications.
