Organization Description

UHD Sports & Fitness serves as a vital and integral part of student life on campus. Sports & Fitness provides the university community with programs that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health promoting, physical activities conducive to wellness and personal development. Sports & Fitness supports the mission of UHD by seeking to create a climate that motivates members to embrace a healthy lifestyle which can enhance their academic studies, build friendships and social skills, develop leadership qualities and cultivate a sense of ownership and belonging to the university. UHD students are second to none and deserve a first-rate program.

The three-level, 30,000 square foot Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center includes two ball courts equipped for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, a multipurpose studio designed for aerobics, dance and martial arts, and a fitness center with state-of-the-art weight equipment and such cardiovascular units as treadmills, ellipticals and such cardiovascular units as treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes.

In addition to group exercise, personal training, massage therapy and nutrition counseling, Sports & Fitness also offers healthy workshops and certifications. Three to four virtual and/or in person workshops covering topics found on the wellness continuum including, physical, social, spiritual, environmental, financial, occupational, psychological and intellectual. Additionally, the department spearheads a health fair in both the spring and fall for the university community. Evaluations and assessments are conducted for SACS and university compliance.

An internship with Sports & Fitness will provide students with hands on experience with programming, facilitating, assessing and evaluating a health and wellness program for a robust university environment. These transferable skills will help set the intern apart from other applicants pursuing positions within the health and wellness field.

Description of Internship

An intern will work closely with the Associate Director of Sports & Fitness and the Fitness Coordinator within the department of Sports & Fitness. An intern will assist with the facilitation of monthly healthy workshops and certifications to include marketing, promoting, set up, facilitation and evaluation. Wellness Wednesday topics will be proposed, researched and facilitated to include setting up table displays and engaging with the university community. Interns will serve on the health fair committee and various committees of interest allowing them to engage and work with others on health and wellness initiatives. Finally, interns will be asked to research and propose programming for upcoming semesters to include reaching out and networking with outside health and wellness organizations for the purpose of collaborating with the university. Interns will also be invited to work on research opportunities.

Criteria for Interns
Interns must be…

  • engaged in a higher education academic curriculum consistent with health and wellness studies
  • interested in health and wellness programming
  • professional and eager to work with others
  • Available during normal operating hours (8am-5pm) during the week (Monday – Friday)
  • proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)

Compensation

120 – 200 hours over 15-week semester = $900 in addition to experience to fulfill academic requirement
