Organization Description
The Mayor’s Youth Council is an organization of high school students who are civically engaged and have an interest in government, public service, and politics. They mirror the elected Houston City Council with district and at-large members, aides, a chair, vice chair, and secretary. The program helps bring awareness to issues that are important to young people, organizes service learning and volunteering opportunities to address those issues, and gives them access to city officials and key leaders. The mission of the MYC is to give youth a voice. Youth Council is a program managed by the Department of Neighborhoods, a section that works to help improve the quality of life in Houston communities through people-focused programs and strong community partnerships.

Description of Internship
The MYC Advisor is seeking an intern to provide support to the program during the spring or fall term. The internship will offer direct service experience implementing a youth service program, project development, and program management with mentorship and feedback from an executive level manager. Flexible schedule 10 to 15 hours per week that includes a Tuesday evening and at least one Saturday. Internship is unpaid. Duties will include:

  • Conducting research
  • Assisting with preparation for meetings and service projects
  • Assisting with development, coordination, and implementation of service projects
  • Managing social media platforms
  • Creating presentations and/or presentation materials
  • Performing general administrative activities

Criteria for Interns
Applicants are students who interested in pursuing careers in public service, public administration, or non-profit administration. The program is looking for students who have experience and/or an interest in working with youth and learning about youth programs. You are friendly, outgoing, and have good interpersonal skills. You’re a positive role model for teenagers, will meet them at their level, and treat them with respect. Because you’ll be working around youth, you’re ok undergoing a criminal background check.

You’re a good researcher with the ability to search for, locate, organize, evaluate, and present information on topics presented to you. You’re a strong writer and communicator – clear and concise. You’re computer proficient in Microsoft Word. You may have some experience with Excel and/or Publisher, PowerPoint, or Prezi. You understand social media platforms.

You want to learn by doing. You’ll ask questions, feel comfortable acknowledging your limitations, and asking for help. You need experience working in an office environment and you don’t mind contributing to the administrative or clerical work that always has to be done. You take your work seriously without taking yourself too seriously.
