Scholarships

The College of Sciences & Technology offers an array of scholarships to science and technology students each year. Some scholarships are need-based, while others are merit-based. Each internally and externally funded scholarship will have unique guidelines in terms of criteria, award amount, the frequency of awards, deadlines,and submission processes.

Scholarship opportunities:


Carmen and Antonio Marin Scholarship

Award: $750
Criteria:
  • Scholarship applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and a resident of the State of Texas.
  • Scholarship applicant exhibits leadership qualities as determined by the scholarship selection committee.
  • Scholarship applicant should be (1) an undergraduate majoring in Computer Science, (2) a graduate in MSDA, or (3) a graduate pursuing a graduate certificate in Data Analytics.
  • Scholarship recipient must maintain a 3.50 or better cumulative GPA.
  • Scholarship recipients may accept other scholarships and grants in conjunction with Carmen and Antonio Marin Scholarship.
  • Funds can be used to cover expenses for tuition, books, fees, and/ or supplies for the coming academic semester. Any expenses of a recipient in excess of the amount deposited must be borne by the student.
  • Scholarship award is non-renewable. Scholarship applicant must apply each year.

H-LSAMP Scholarship for CSET

Award: up to $5,000 per academic year
Criteria: College applicants must satisfy:
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA overall in college (minimum 3.0 GPA for High School)
  • Completion of a college-preparatory high school curriculum
  • U.S citizen or permanent resident status

Females and ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

Scholarship recipients must maintain the minimum GPA each semester and participate in activities such as computer science, mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering majors to be eligible for renewal each semester.

Application:
  • Apply and be accepted into Scholar's Academy.
  • To apply complete the Scholar's Academy Application Guidelines form and E-Application.
  • One-page typed statement of your academic and professional goals.
  • Copy of your official high school and/or college transcript(s).
  • Copy of current SAT/ACT scores (high school students only).
  • Two sealed recommendation forms and/or letters from current counselors, Math/Science/English instructors.
  • Completed FAFSA and UHD Financial Aid forms.

Ongard Sirisaengtaksin Scholarship for Computer Science

Award: $500 for Fall and possibly renewable for Spring
Criteria:
  • Be a declared major in Computer Science
  • Have completed at least 30 credit hours toward the degree, made a B or better in CS 1410, including at least 30 or more hours from UHD
  • Be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received

College applicants must satisfy:

  • Minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in college
  • Major in Computer Science

The $500 for Fall and possibly renewable for Spring upon the availability of funds. To maintain scholarship eligibility for the Spring semester, Fall recipients must:

  • Maintain good academic standing
  • Make satisfactory progress toward completion of a Computer Science degree

In selecting scholarship recipients, the Scholarship Committee gives priority to:
  • The potential impact of the scholarship on the educational and personal goals of the applicant
  • The applicant’s commitment to scholarship in their major
  • The applicant’s educational background as documented by official transcripts

Elias Y. Deeba Memorial Scholarship for MS

Award: $500 for the Spring semester
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared major in Mathematics (B.S., B.A. or B.A. with Secondary Teacher Certification). Should no applicants meet the majors listed, other mathematics-related majors (e.g. Applied Statistics or Data Science) in the department will be considered.
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Have completed at least 45 credit hours toward the degree.
  • Be enrolled full-time in the College of Sciences and Technology at the University of Houston-Downtown in the semester the scholarship is received.

Mathematics Education Endowment for MS

Award: $500 for the Spring semester and renewable for the Fall semester subject to continued eligibility and availability of funds
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Scholarship applicant must be pursuing a B.A. or B.S. in Mathematics with Secondary Teacher Certification, or B.S. in Applied Statistics with Secondary Teacher Certification.
  • Preference is given to scholarship applicants who demonstrate financial need.
  • Scholarship applicants must enroll for 12 or more credit hours each semester of award.
  • Applicant should submit an essay or personal statement as part of the application process.

Edwin and Justine Hodgess Memorial Scholarship for MS

Award: $750 for the Spring semester and renewable for the Fall semester subject to continued eligibility and availability of funds
Criteria:

To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared major in Applied Statistics, Mathematics, or Data Analytics (B.A., B.S., or M.S.)
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Have completed at least 45 credit hours toward the degree, at least 30 or more are from UHD
  • Be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received
  • The scholarship may be received for up to 2 academic years.

For MSDA Students:

  • Have an overall GPA of 3.5 or greater
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received

June P. Wood Memorial Scholarship for MS

Award: $1500 for the Spring semester and renewable for the Fall semester subject to continued eligibility and availability of funds
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared major in Mathematics (B.S., B.A., or B.A. with Secondary Teacher Certification)

  • Must be a declared major in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Statistics
  • A certified full-time undergraduate
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Completed 60 credit hours toward the degree
  • Need-based (must demonstrate financial need)

M. Elizabeth Steen Scholarship for MS

Award: $1000 for the Spring semester and renewable for the Fall semester subject to continued eligibility and availability of funds
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared major in Mathematics (either B.A. or B.S.), preference given to math majors transferring from Lone Star College.
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours in the semester scholarship is received.

Miriam Morales Scholarship

Award: $500 for the Spring semester
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared degree-seeking student in Mathematics (B.A. or B.S.), Statistics (B.S.), or Data Analytics (M.S.)
  • Have an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater
  • Be at least half-time enrolled at UHD and in good standing in the semesters the scholarship is received

For MSDA Students:

  • Have an overall GPA of 3.5 or greater
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received

ESPRIT de Corps Fellowship for Teachers for MAT
(Masters of Arts in Teaching)



Award: $6,000 per semester for two years
Eligibility:
  • Have earned a degree in a STEM discipline. Accepted applicants must also apply and be accepted into the MAT program.
Application:
  • A personal essay that addresses why you have chosen science or mathematics teaching as a career path.
  • A current UHD transcript (if applicable) and/or official transcripts of all colleges attended.
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty, at least one from an MS faculty member familiar with your academic work.
  • Fill out the application A scholarship application includes updated personal information (name, address, telephone number, email); proof of citizenship, and proof of having completed an undergraduate STEM degree program.

Pre-Health Professions Scholarship for NS

 

Award: $1500
Criteria:
  • UHD degree-seeking premedical student
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Completed 24 UHD credit hours
  • Must be declared as a Pre-Health Professions student (Health Professions include degrees awarded by Medical, Dental, Veterinary, Pharmacy, Nursing, etc., schools).
  • Must have at least 60 credit hours of college-level credit
  • Have a 3.50 minimum GPA
  • Registered for 12 credit hours at UHD during the semester that the application is submitted

Note: Students are eligible to reapply for this scholarship in future semesters as long as they continue to meet the stated criteria for the scholarship. Students receiving scholarships from other programs may also apply for this scholarship provided they meet the stated criteria.

The Joan S. Abramowitz Undergraduate
Research Scholarship Endowment for NS

Award: $3,000 Full time
Criteria:
  • Must have completed at least 24 hours of college work at UHD
  • Must have completed General Microbiology or equivalent
  • Must be a certified full-time undergraduate or graduate
  • Must have a minimum of 3.25 GPA
  • Scholarship recipient must commit to a minimum of 40 hours per week of research in the lab in which they will work
  • Must be a member of UHD Leeuwenhoek Society

The James H. and Minnie M. Edmonds Scholarship for CST

Award: up to $3,000 per academic year
Criteria:

College applicants must satisfy:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA overall in college
  • Admission into University of Houston-Downtown
  • Major in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computer science, data science
  • Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid

Females and ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.

Welch Foundation Scholarships for NS

 

Award: Up to $1000 Full time (12 hrs/ wk) to up to $500 Part time (6 hrs/wk)
Criteria:
  • Be a declared major in the NS department
  • Have a 2.5 minimum GPA
  • Your research is in one of the disciplines within the NS Department with an NS faculty
  • Registration or credit for 3300 research
  • UHD Registration is required
  • Completed scholarship application form
  • Obtain the signature of a recommending faculty on the application form
  • Attach a one-page research statement to the application form describing why you are interested in research, your previous research experience if any, and how you plan to balance research, classes, and other commitments this semester.

Note: You can receive this scholarship in addition to other scholarships for the same semester, depending upon your financial need.

Scholars Academy Program Scholarship

 

Award: Up to $5,000 per year
Criteria:
  • Current High School Seniors
    • Have a 3.0 overall GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
    • Minimum SAT test score of 1,000 (500 each on mathematics and critical reading sections) or equivalency on other standardized exams
    • Credit for at least pre-calculus in high school (minimally preferred)
    • Be enrolled as a full-time student and member of the Scholars Academy
  • Automatic Acceptance Pathway for Freshmen into Scholars Academy
    • Be offered and accept a UHD Merit Scholarship Renewable (4 years at $6,000/yr; minimum GPA of 3.5) must complete UHD Admissions application by Dec. 1st
    • Be offered and accept a UHD Non-Renewable Scholarship (1 year up to $5,000; minimum GPA of 3.5)
    • Submit SA applications following the scholarship award
  • Current Transfer applicants
    • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in college within last 4-5 years
    • Be enrolled as a full-time student and member of the Scholars Academy
    • Be offered and accept a UHD Transfer Merit Scholarship: automatic acceptance into Scholars

Note: Most scholarships require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; international students are still invited to apply; New students entering UHD as freshmen or transfers (less than 75 college credit hours) are the first priority. Socially and economically disadvantaged and/or disabled students, veterans, females and ethnic minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Dr. Barry S. Garrett Endowed Scholarship Award

Award: $2000 Spring semester (pending available funding)
Criteria:
  • Current member of the UHD Scholars Academy (SA) and a declared major in a Chemistry field
  • Overall GPA of 3.25 or greater
  • Graduating no sooner than next Fall semester
  • Nominations are accepted in the Fall semesters (self-nominations are accepted)
  • Awards will be announced at the annual Student Research Conference (SRC)
  • The awardee will receive the Barry Garrett Scholarship as their SA scholarship ($2000 per semester) for the upcoming spring semester of the current academic year. Thus, the awardee must be an active SA member and enrolled full time in UHD courses that lead to finishing their chemistry degree in the semester awarded.
  • The selected recipient's name will also be engraved within the perpetual plaque outside the SA office

Nancy Rich Memorial Scholarship for MS

Award: $500 for the Spring semester
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a declared major at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours in the semester scholarship is received.

Letter writers typically address how they know you and in what capacity, your academic/research potential, work ethic, etc. Let your letter writers know which qualities are emphasized by the scholarships you are applying for, if any.

Graduate Students Only Opportunity

 

Myrtle C. & James L. Watts Scholarship for MS in Data Analytics

Award: $500 for the Fall semester.

This scholarship was established and funded by UHD Alumna Ms. Courtney Watts who earned a BS in Mathematics and an MS in Data Analytics at UHD. Ms. Watts hopes to help other UHD students realize their educational dreams while honoring her grandparents Ms. Myrtle C. & James L. Watts who impacted Courtney’s life immensely.
Criteria:

College applicants must satisfy:

  • Declared major in Data Analytics at UHD
  • Minimum GPA 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in graduate studies in the MSDA at UHD
  • Have completed at least 9 credit hours towards the degree upon applying for the scholarship
  • Be enrolled in at least 9 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is received

All applicants must submit the following materials together in one PDF file titled Myrtle C. Watts Scholarship (this should also be the subject of the email) to Dr. Chan at [email protected].

  • Application form clearly indicating which scholarships you are applying for and containing up-to-date personal information (name, major, address, phone #, email), along with any other scholarships/honors received.

  • A personal essay that describes your experience at UHD as a graduate student, your educational goals, and how this scholarship will help you achieve your goals
  • One letter of recommendation from MSDA faculty member in the College of Sciences and Technology familiar with your academic work (professor may email this directly to [email protected])
  • A current UHD transcript and official transcripts of all colleges attended (due to COVID-19 unofficial transcripts will be accepted).

In selecting scholarship recipients, the Scholarship Committee gives priority to:

  • The potential impact of the scholarship on the educational goals of the applicant
  • The applicant’s educational background as documented by official transcripts

CST Graduate Second Year Excellence Scholarship

Award: $1000 Fall and Spring
Criteria:

In order to be considered for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Completed at least 18 graduate hours in either the MS in Data Analytics or the MS in Artificial Intelligence program
  • UHD MSDA or MSAI Graduate GPA 3.75 or better.
  • Scholarship applicants must be enrolled in at least 9 semester credit hours in the terms awarded.
  • Two UHD faculty recommendations: If you are MSDA, then you need one from a Computer Science Faculty and one from a Statistics Faculty. If you are MSAI , then you need two recommendations both from Computer Science Faculty.
