Emerging Scholars Faculty Coordinator
The University of Houston-Downtown is a Hispanic-serving and Minority-serving Institution in the heart of the most diverse city in the United States. More than half of our students self-identify as Latino, and nearly a quarter of our students self-identify as Black. The Emerging Scholars of Color series serves that goal by connecting our students to scholars and scholarship that reflect their lived experiences.
Emerging Scholars provides a forum for early career scholars working on Latino/a/e/x affairs to gain valuable experience with the major components of a standard academic research presentation, while also showcasing their teaching and scholarship on a public stage. It contributes to the enrichment of the teaching and research environments at the University of Houston-Downtown by simultaneously putting students in contact with intellectual role models who look like them and exposing faculty and administrators to the latest cutting-edge research and pedagogies. Participants will have the opportunity to present their work, receive valuable feedback, and form lasting connections with peers and mentors who share their passion for Latinx Studies.
The Emerging Scholar Faculty Coordinator is new initiative aimed at identifying a CHSS tenure track or lecturer faculty willing to direct this dialogue and reflection within the field of Latinx Studies. Historically, the Center has brought together emerging scholars from diverse backgrounds to explore critical issues, share groundbreaking research, and engage in meaningful conversations about the Latinx experience with our faculty and students. The scholars present their research and teach a class during the Spring semester, usually using as a forum current LATS 1301 courses or related courses within CHSS. This is a great opportunity to expand your resume in the area of organizing a scholarly event.
The program Coordinator, under the guidance of CLS directive, is entrusted with:
- Preparing “Call for Applications” in the Fall semester
- Distributing the “Call for Applications”
- Communicating with applicants on expectations and presentation format
- Organizing a cohort of faculty to evaluate applicants, and later, teaching and research presentations
- Coordinating with faculty to identify time and dates for presentations
- Coordinating promotion and evaluation process
- Creating or editing the rubrics for evaluation (i.e. Qualtrics)
- Sharing results with participating emerging scholars
- Collecting pictures and bios for CLS web site
Emerging Scholar Faculty Coordinator will receive a $1000 stipend, certificate, and be recognized as such in all official correspondence.
